Examples of application areas
Keeping prematurely born children in a continuously dark or continuously lit environment while in the NICU, deprives them of the circadian stimuli they would have received during pregnancy. At Helsingborg Hospital, the light environment is adapted to meet the biological needs of both babies, parents and the staff.
Elderly have different needs compared to younger individuals. In care facilities, it is usual for elderly to spend the majority of time indoors, which may prevent them from sustaining their circadian rhythm.
Acute care patients typically dwell in low levels of light, which may limit their exposure to the light they need. Not surprisingly, circadian dysrhythmias are often found, and hospitalized patients often suffer from sleep and circadian rhythm disruption.

Shorten length of stay
With higher levels of light intensity, length of stay can be reduced. A study from 2013 found that length of stay was reduced by 7.3 hours per 100x increase of daylight inside.³
Improve shift work
Many shift workers experience sleepiness at work which can increase the risk of human error. Use of adapted light can therefore be appropriate to help reduce fatigue. ⁴
