Biocentric lighting at Anneroskolan – A successful initiative for improved grades and reduced absenteeism

Anneroskolan, located in the Dalhem district of Helsingborg, is an F-9 school (from the age of 6 to 16) with approximately 300 students. The school’s vision is to create a more socially sustainable neighborhood by improving the school’s outcomes. “The school is an important institution in our society, and our leadership constantly strives to enhance the working environment for both students and staff. A significant aspect of this vision was to invest in biocentric lighting,” says Anders Velin Persson, Deputy Principal of Anneroskolan.

The goal was to improve students’ academic performance
Studies indicate that Biocentric lighting, which adjusts throughout the day, promotes sleep and increases energy levels. It also enhances cognitive abilities such as concentration and problem-solving. “We realized that a work environment with health-promoting lighting could have a direct impact on performance and well-being,” explains Anders. “By upgrading the school’s lighting system, we hoped to improve students’ academic results, reduce illness-related absenteeism among the staff, and create a better working environment to support our objective,” says Anders.

Lighting with documented measurements and effects
The choice of BrainLit as the supplier was based on their expertise and innovative technology in the field. “We had some knowledge of circadian lighting from articles and studies. BrainLit became the obvious choice for us because their Biocentric lighting had documented measurements and effects,” says Birgitta Karlsson, Deputy Principal of Anneroskolan.

“We use the Autolit feature, which makes it easy for us. The system optimizes lighting automatically, ensuring that students and staff always have access to the right type of light at the right time,” explains Birgitta.

A significant increase in academic results
It has yielded results. Biocentric lighting may have played a role in the significant increase in academic results and the reduction of staff absenteeism. “We also found that the lighting not only positively affected academic results and absenteeism but also the overall well-being of students and staff. From the spring semester of 2022 to the spring semester of 2023, the merit score increased by 10.3%, and the gap between our school and other schools in Helsingborg decreased by 42.5%. This positive outcome has been a strong confirmation that our initiative has been successful,” summarizes Anders.
