Surgical Contrast Light (SCL) from BrainLit is an advanced surgical lighting system engineered together with OR teams to improve screen visibility, reduce glare, and support visual precision in modern operating rooms. The system is easy to install with plug-and-play components, auto-configuration, and full integration with existing infrastructure. SCL delivers precise, comfortable, and efficient lighting for the surgical team.
The Challenge with Traditional OR Lighting
In many modern ORs, traditional white ceiling lights are more of a hindrance than a help. They create glare, wash out surgical monitors, and strain the eyes of both surgeons and support staff. The typical solution of turning off the ceiling lights entirely, creates various problems. Surgeons are forced to work with overly bright screens in darkened rooms, while the rest of the team loses essential visibility.
Surgical Contrast Light (SCL) from BrainLit is a smart, fully integrated lighting solution built specifically to address these challenges which improves visibility, reduces eye strain, and supports every phase of surgical care.
What is Surgical Contrast Lighting?

Rather than relying on standard white light, SCL uses scientifically selected complementary colors to create a balanced, functional visual environment that works for both screen-based and open procedures.
As a backdrop to the reddish tones common in endoscopy, interventional radiology, and laparoscopy, the ceiling luminaires features a broad-spectrum green light. This enhances image contrast with minimal compromise to color fidelity. Thanks to the broad-spectrum light, staff can clearly distinguish colors on instruments, surfaces, and materials.

Behind the surgeon, broad-spectrum red light minimizes visible reflections on the screen by blending into the display. The result is a more focused visual experience and fewer distractions. Importantly, the overall ambient light is set at levels that naturally dilate the pupils. This improves visual sharpness, reduces fatigue, and helps the eyes adapt more easily to changes in lighting throughout a procedure.
Developed together with OR teams
SCL was developed in close collaboration with operating room teams and refined by BrainLit’s R&D department. Every element was tuned based on real-world surgical use. For grayscale imaging like X-ray and ultrasound, a magenta-toned chromaticity was experienced to deliver the best contrast and resolution.
Beyond enhancing screen-based tasks, SCL meets the demands of open surgery by delivering appropriate illuminance, CRI, uniformity, glare control, and surgical color temperature. It also supports other phases of the clinical workflow. During prep, cleaning, or patient transitions, the lighting can be quickly adjusted to create a calming or functional environment.
Surgical Contrast Light is purpose-built for procedures where visual precision is critical. It is designed for minimally invasive surgery (MIS), endoscopy, interventions, angiography, radiology, and ultrasound. With one system, teams get better contrast, fewer visual distractions, and lighting that supports focus and performance.
Smart Integration and Seamless Control
Surgical Contrast Light is more than a product. It’s a complete, intelligent system that includes lighting design, pre-project planning, and technical integration support. Installation is quick thanks to modular hardware, automatic component detection, and a streamlined setup process that avoids complex reprogramming. The system uses open communication protocols, making it easy to connect with building infrastructure and touchscreen controls.
